The last Friday of every month at 8:00 PM. No previous experience required.

Ask About The Next Class

Our women's self-defense class is a monthly session held on the last Friday of every month at 8:00 PM. It is designed as an accessible introduction, and the majority of participants arrive with no martial arts experience.

The material is grounded in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which suits this application particularly well: it is built on the principle that a smaller person can control a larger, stronger one through leverage and position rather than strength or speed. The emphasis is on what to do once distance has already been lost, covering escapes from holds and pins, breaking grips, returning to your feet and creating separation.

Nabiha Shaikh leads the program. She is a blue belt with five years of training and a first-place finish at the Aurora BJJ Open, and she teaches the session as a clear progression: posture and base first, then escapes, drilled at a pace each participant sets for herself.

Each session is self-contained, so there is no need to attend in sequence and missing one will not leave you behind. Participants are welcome to attend a single class or to return regularly.

What makes this class different

Last Friday of every month

A standing monthly session at 8:00 PM. There is no intake or fixed course, so any month is a reasonable place to begin.

Led by Nabiha Shaikh

A blue belt with five years of training and a first-place finish at the Aurora BJJ Open, teaching the session from the fundamentals up.

Practical focus

Escapes from holds and pins, grip breaks, returning to your feet and creating distance, rather than competition technique.

Participation at your own pace

Drilling is the core of the session and live sparring is entirely optional. The material is equally useful to those who never spar.

Common questions

How often does the class run?

Once a month, on the last Friday of the month at 8:00 PM. Each session is self-contained, so you may begin in any month and miss one without falling behind.

I have no martial arts experience. Is that a problem?

Not at all, and it is the norm rather than the exception. The class is taught on the assumption of no prior experience, and begins with movement and escapes rather than complex technique.

Am I required to spar?

No. Drilling is the core of the session and sparring is optional. Many participants never take a live round, and the material is equally useful either way.

What should I wear?

A t-shirt and leggings or shorts without zippers, buttons or pockets. Training is done in bare feet, with long hair tied back. Please bring a water bottle. Nothing needs to be purchased beforehand.

What will I learn?

The session focuses on escaping holds and pins, breaking grips, returning to your feet and creating distance. It is genuine Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technique, selected and taught with practical self-defense in mind rather than competition rules.
